Data carriers, interoperability and the EU DPP registry
A passport is only useful if it can be read, trusted and connected. Three building blocks make that possible: the data carrier on the product, the standards that structure the data, and the registry that ties identifiers together.
The data carrier — typically a QR code or an RFID tag — is the physical link between a product and its digital record. Scanning it should lead a consumer, inspector or recycler to the right passport, presenting the information each of them is allowed to see.
Interoperability is what stops passports from becoming thousands of incompatible silos. When providers follow shared, open standards for identifiers and data structures, a passport created by one system can be understood by another — across companies, sectors and borders. That is essential in a single market where products move freely.
Alongside the passports themselves, a central registry is expected to help locate and verify them, supporting authorities and market surveillance. For service providers, designing to these shared foundations from the start — rather than retrofitting later — is the difference between a passport that works everywhere and one that works only in isolation.
Interoperability is a collective outcome, not a single product feature. It depends on providers converging on the same standards — another reason a shared alliance is valuable to the ecosystem.
